TRINBAGONIANS love to decorate for Christmas, even when some of the decor has nothing at all to do with our Caribbean climes.
Like people love those crystal outdoor lights that are meant to mimic icicles hanging from wintry eaves; bundles of pearly batting posing as piles of new-fallen snow; or foreign fir look-alike trees that sport whitened leaves in a show of having been dusted by no-two-are-alike snowflakes.
If that singing snowman from Frozen were here he'd learn real quick what happens to him in summer.
Go big or goof home
So it's no surprise that for years now many here have taken to using large-sized figurines -- from Santas to angels -- to decorate their rooftops for all to see. It's strange, though, that while the "tradition" continues this year, there seems to be a deflated (no pun intended) sort of effort in making sure everything is copacetic with the display. In Trini-speak we'd call it donkeredam: as in "don't care a damn," that the display looks less artful than just plain goofy.
Like this image I saw while scrunched up in a slow-weaving Main Road maxi heading to D'Abadie for virgin coconut oil. The scene was atop the El Dorado supermarket I loved going to with Marmee as a child (best kurma ever!).
I'll let the pictures (top & bottom) speak a thousand words for themselves.
Yet, I cannot help imagining more to the story.
Swing low sweet lariat
What if, instead of dangling the deer there, the rope/cord/chain/what have you had snapped, and the figurine had gone swinging through the air, almost taking the head off of a passerby in the parking lot.Being Trini, he wouldn't instantly think of suing. He'd rush home and, as Trini tends to equate with raconteur, would regale his family with the tale healthily embellished: "This white ting come flying pass mih head, WOOOSH!" Etc.
What had me rolling all over again when I got a chance to review the picture, were the quirkily apropos slogans peeking out from the Pepsi advert below the perilous ledge.
That fallen figure sure did "Break the routine." And I'm hoping to help you all "Enjoy the moments."
Shine on!
